Ah, the best man speech! It’s such a honor to be the best man and give that special toast. When anyone at a wedding speaks in front of a crowd, it can be nerve raking but if you keep it simple, sweet and add a little humor your speech you will sure be a hit! Here are a few do’s, don’ts and advice to help you be successful for your wedding toast.
Some best man’s do not come prepared and then they ramble for 20 minutes. How boring for the audience! Usually, the rambles are about inside jokes and embarrassing things. That it not the place for this. Keep it classy. If you feel the need to tell an embarrassing story, make a speech at the stag party instead. Keep it fairly personal!
Be clever, make a joke or two. But do not make any funnies to embarrass the bride and groom. Please remember when writing you speech, it’s their day, so keep them happy! Also, do not rush through your toast. Say what you need to say but again, do not ramble.
Here are a few key points you should follow
- Introduce yourself
- Say how you are related to the bride and groom
- Give some compliments to the bride and also about how beautiful the day is or how nice the venue is decorated.
- Add a personal story on how you met the groom (and maybe even the bride)
- Say a few jokes, everyone likes to laugh.
- Give some advice (if possible)
- Make sure you do the polite thing and thank the people who helped make this day possible, especially the parents of the bride and groom. Also, a good thing to do it know how to properly pronounce their names as well.
- End with a strong closing line, weather it be funny or sentimental.
- And finally, the toast. You may chose to write your own, or use an Irish Blessing, or a poem or even a wedding wish for the couple.
Another important thing as mentioned in yesterdays blog, is to practice and have someone proof read or edit your toast. Say your speech out loud to someone and do not wait till the last minute to write your speech. You do not want to sound unprepared. Lastly, do NOT embarrass yourself and be the sloppy drunk best man. Try and be professional and respectful to the audience and most importantly to the bride and groom. After, your speech is done, game on! Go have yourself a few drinks and relax and enjoy the rest of the night with the bride and groom.
